The school year is almost over, and we want to celebrate with a giant party!

We’re hosting our annual Primavera MayFest this Saturday May 19, from 3-7 p.m. on our Primary playground (1934 Berkeley Ave.). MayFest is always a blast—live music from some of our favorite musicians, including some Primavera parents and students! There will be face painting, a bouncy house and slip-n-slide, a silent auction, and all of our favorite summery treats—watermelon, ices, hot dogs, and (for the grownups, of course) some of our favorite local beer. This year we’re also setting up a toddler playland in the YCC courtyards, to make MayFest easier for our youngest friends.

We hope to see you there! Admission is $10 for adults, and kids 12 & under are free.

The music at Harambee will be provided by Hard Proof Afrobeat. This Austin-based collective of musicians is the sole purveyor of African funk in the state of Texas (and features Khabele’s own Joe Sokolik!). Hard Proof was featured recently in Tribeza magazine:

“We’re fortunate to live in a city blessed with a seemingly unending amount of talent. On any given night, we can drive short distances to find that memorable country band, sizzling blues outfit, exciting Latin ensemble or vivacious punk group. Austin’s musical landscape truly is limitless. And over the last few years, the all-star collective known as Hard Proof Afrobeat has stretched it further, in fact, all the way across the Atlantic. The band was officially founded in 2008 after a few successful brunch meetings between Joe Woullard (Ocote Soul Sounds, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears), Derek Phelps (BJL & the Honeybears), Michael Faircloth (Sea Legs) and Stephen Bidwell (The Calm Blue Sea). By fall of that year, the foursome had recruited a number of capable instrumentalists, and together, they cut a 4-song demo at Cacophony Recorders in town. Faircloth departed the following year, but HPA soldiered on. In early 2010, the band recorded its truly amazing self-titled debut album, fusing funk, jazz, and elements of traditional African music to conjure up mesmerizing medleys that take turns to soothe and exhilarate. It’s the soundtrack to that daily rush-hour drive, the setting for that enticing exotic voyage and the backdrop to your next psychedelic trip, all rolled into one. In fact, this music should really be a part of your life, and 2012 is as good a time as any to make that happen. Hard Proof’s second full-length is due later this year.”

On a bright and sunny Saturday morning in late January, Primavera parents and staff gathered in a theatre at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in South Austin to hear from Primavera Director Jennifer Tyson, Executive Director Khotso Khabele, and some of the wonderful teachers from Primavera and Khabele. Our hope was for everyone to gain more clarity, a deeper and richer understanding, and a true feeling of excitement about our united school. It was a time to come together as a community and hear more about the broad vision that our school directors have created, and the detailed ways that this vision will be made real in our daily life as a school.

We also unveiled our newly redesigned full-school website, viewed the Emergent Education video, and announced the new name for the Primavera campus: Primavera Montessori at the Khabele School.

Here are some video clips and written transcripts from the event. We invite you to view/read them, and join in our excitement about the incredible school community we are working to build for children 18 months through 18 years old!

Thank you to Film teacher Alex Thomas and film student Liam Pope for filming and editing these clips!

This year’s event will be our fourth celebration, and it will be held for the first time at the beautiful Central Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 18 at 7:30 p.m. The gorgeous sanctuary has amazing acoustics and will be a perfect setting for our student musicians. Featured that night will be all of our jazz bands—Middle School Jazz Band I & II, High School Jazz Band I & II, as well as some independent groups—and both student choruses. We would love for you to join us!
