2001 – 2002 The Khabele School was founded in the Fall of 2001 with nine students. The school gained its non-profit status and developed its values of “Freedom, Self-Expression, and Excellence.” 2002 – 2003After its humble beginning, The Khabele School grew to 15 students. This year was defined by community service and the establishment of the school’s presence in Austin.
2003 – 2004
During its third year, enrollment grew to 24 students. Finance, welding, and art classes were integrated, as well as a full-scale music program. Students completed internship programs at law offices, local hospitals, and museums. A new Board of Directors was recruited, and the school began to plan for the future.
2004 – 2005
The school’s fourth year was characterized by leadership and growth. With enrollment at 37, students continued to hone their leadership skills. The Community Leader Program was founded, nine students participated in the first Summer Leadership Intensive, and all students completed successful semester projects. The school integrated a grant-writing program, started a choir, and implemented a structured parent program. The move to the historic Abbey Mansion put Khabele on the map among Austin’s private schools.
2005 – 2006
The school grew to 68 students. During this year, the school acquired a Mac Mobile Lab with one laptop per every two students, integrated a virtual science lab for Biology and Chemistry, and sent many students around the world for Global Immersion Trips. Countries visited include Senegal, Guatemala, Mexico, India, and Kenya.
2006 – 2007
The Khabele School grew to 100 students and acquired two adjacent buildings in which to house the middle school classrooms, a new science lab, and an art/ music/ film studio. A competitive athletics program was started including soccer, cross country track, basketball and volleyball. This academic year was dedicated to completing the accreditation process with the Texas Alliance of Accredited Private Schools, thereby fine-tuning the academic and elective curriculum as well as the teacher, student, and parent training programs.
2007 – 2008
The school’s seventh year was characterized by refinement and excellence. The school grew to 150 students and acquired a studio annex one block away from campus at 701 W. 7th St. to house the martial arts, dance, yoga and music programs. Khabele faculty underwent over 70 hours of training and development during the year, and the AP program were implemented. SAT preparation courses were required and an intensive college-planning course was offered to 11th and 12th grade students. The First Annual “Khabele Forward” was founded, which is a 3-day camping trip for all students that includes ropes courses, mission statement creating, arts and crafts, swimming, athletics and general community building activities.
With 170 students, the school community worked diligently to raise funds for the to the new facility addition. The new building was designated for science lab with plumbed sinks, lab storage, and lab equipment, which helped improve the quality of the science program as well as offer AP science classes. This new facility also houses the art studio, administrative offices, a counseling office, a general-purpose classroom, a library, a media arts lab and lounge areas. Khabele students won several district and state awards in the TAPPS music and arts competitions, the TAAPS athletics seasons, and the PSIA academic competition. Students traveled to South Africa, Italy, and right here in the U.S to Washington D.C. for the presidential inauguration.
2009 – 2010
Last year's new developments included additions to our facility, services, staffing, and curriculum. Two new classrooms were added to Building 4 as well as a new cafe that sells hot and healthy lunches. With 190 students, the year was highlighted with the addition of many new AP classes and the expansion of our college counseling program. Our academic program was strengthened with the addition of two new Curriculum Directors to oversee our pedagogy. A new School Counselor was hired to help support students.
2010 – 2011
This year has already turned out to be one of our most exciting school years. With almost 200 students enrolled, we have shored up our Teaching Assistant Program, Project Week, and our Character Education Program. We also added Senior Projects, a new Independent Learning Program, and several new AP offerings. The international program is expanding with the addition of new students from all over the globe.
