Admissions Process

The first step to finding out more about the Khabele School admissions process is to visit the campus at one of the weekly admissions tours, held every Thursday at 8:45am.  Our Admissions Director This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it provides visitors with a brief overview of the program and curriculum, conducts a full tour of the campus and classrooms, and explains the application process.  To ask specific questions via email, feel free to email our Admissions Director This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The goal of the Khabele School admissions process is to ensure that the 6th through 12th grade population of admissionsprocess_picapproximately 200 students shares and respects the mission and values of the school.  We only accept students who want to be at the Khabele School, as we feel that our environment of trust, freedom, and respect is dependent on having a student body that is fully engaged and committed to our approach and community.  There is no "typical" Khabele School student as our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and display a diversity of talents, interests, and aptitudes.  Approximately 1/3 of our students come from their local public schools, 1/3 come from private, parochial and prep schools, and 1/3 come from homeschooling, montessori, and progressive schools.  Our criterion for admissions include student motivation, character, academic potential, artistic ability or interest, teacher recommendations, and interviews.

One parent said it best when she said, "The Khabele School is for smart and creative kids."  Our students tend to be thinkers, philosophers, writers, performers, and activists or have the untapped potential to be those things and just need the right educational environment to help them bring out their hidden talents and potentials.

Although we review every application individually and welcome a wide variety of applications, we do not accept students with severe learning disabilities, emotional issues, histories of drug use, or behavioral issues.  We do not provide learning remediation, tutoring, therapy, or behavior modification programs needed to help students with those issues become successful.

Khabele is set up for students who want to pursue higher education, want to be part of an intimate and close-knit community, and want to contribute to their school, family, and the world.

The Admissions Process includes the following steps:

  • becky2Come to an Admissions Tour any Thursday at 8:45 am (no RSVP needed)
  • Complete the Application for Admissions
  • Remit $50 Application Fee
  • Submit teacher & personal recommendation letters
  • Schedule 2 student trial days
  • Complete 2 interviews during the 2nd trial day

Once the trial day process is complete and all student records, recommendations forms, and application materials are turned into the school, the Admissions Council will review the application.  The Admissions Council is a group of 10 students and the school's Admissions Director, Moya Khabele.  The Council decides based on a majority vote on whether or not the student is the right fit for the school.  Click here for a list of forms and needed documents to initiate the Admissions Process.
