I studied English Literature and Film Studies at the University of Kentucky before coming to UT-Austin for a degree in Film Production. Favorite authors include James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Hunter S. Thompson, Frank X. Walker, David Sedaris, and Ian McEwan--but I also enjoy silly magazines. I will serve the Khabele School this year as the Front Desk Manager and also plan to assist with editing, website content, and newsletter article writing.

Melanie Alberts - Office Manager
Although I grew up in several towns across the country, I consider myself from Austin. In 1997 my husband and I moved here from Charlottesville, Virginia where I worked at Monticello and acted in outdoor Shakespearean productions. My work history is also varied (from National Park Ranger to Massage Therapist) but I've been a writer for as long as I can remember and I'm always working on some project, whether it's a poem, story, haiku collage greeting card or a screenplay. I'm happiest working for organizations that serve communities in a positive, progressive fashion. As Office Manager, or "OM," I attempt to bring a level of calm to the everyday business of the Khabele front lobby. As a writer, I enjoy the mini-dramas played out before my desk as I answer the phone, greet visitors, enter attendance, print schedules and romance the Ricoh copier. As a mom, I appreciate our parents' concerns and delights. What delights me is that each day brings new joys, compelling situations and that at our wonderful school, nothing is routine.

Melissa Andrews - Academic Dean of Humanities & Dance Teacher
As a dancer, scholar, ethnographic videographer, community organizer, teacher and choreographer, in each of my endeavors I strive to make connections in ways of thinking and perceiving. The connections between disciplines are what make intellectual pursuits exciting. I have taught for more than ten years for at least 1000 students, and consider it my life calling. In college I studied Philosophy and Anthropology, and received a Masters in Dance and American Popular History. I have performed my choreographic work in three countries, have had my own dance company, and have published academic articles. This will be my fourth year at Khabele and I overseeing the Humanities Curriculum, managing the Independent Learning Program and Senior Projects Program, and teaching Dance. Finally, I plan to lead my second fall project week trip to Brazil so that we can spend a little time floating down the Amazon and dancing until our feet hurt in Brazil.

Jason Daniel - Middle School Director & Middle School Science Teacher
From a young age, I had the desire to become a teacher. Some of my most formative experiences occurred in the woods of Colorado at a summer camp. There I learned my love of the outdoors and respect for nature. For college, I attended the University of Oklahoma where I received my Bachelors of Science in Science Education. Directly after graduation, I moved to Colorado to work at an Outdoor Education Center. I then moved back to Oklahoma and began teaching high school Physics. After teaching in the public school system, I decided to go back to school and get my Masters in Science Education. Besides teaching, I have: sky dived from over 11,000 feet; climbed eight "14'ers" in Colorado; lived in Germany for two months during high school; worked as a bellman and a ballroom/swing dance instructor. This year, my sixth at Khabele, I will continue my role as the primary Middle School Science teacher. In addition to teaching classes, I am also the Director of the Middle School. This is a position that I hold with great honor. It is with great pride that I take the reigns of the Middle School program and I am proud to work with such a great team and phenomenal students. It is so amazing to get up every morning and come to my dream job.

Lisa Dubuque - Dean of Students, College Counselor & Registrar
Thanks to one wonderful English teacher in Minnesota, I discovered the career path that would keep me happy and challenged in my work place for the rest of my life. I earned my Bachelor of Art with a major in English Literature and a Minor in Secondary Education. I filled up my free time volunteering at various schools in Fort Collins and mentoring at-risk youth. After an entertaining and challenging stint of teaching public school in Colorado, I made my way to Texas to teach in the private school system. Soon after arriving, I was presented with the opportunity of co-founding Khabele and have been here since. I realize that all teens deserve individualized attention, and I spend much of my time giving that to each student at Khabele. I wear many hats at Khabele, including Dean of Students, College Counselor and Registrar and hail as the general go-to girl for any of your Khabele related needs.

Salvador Flores - Building & Maintenance Staff
I am returning for my fourth year at Khabele as the general go-to guy for everything that has to do with the facility and the grounds. I have managed to keep everything beautiful and organized through the addition of the middle school building, the new studio, and Building 4 at 807 Rio Grande. I also do all of the gardening and landscaping for the school grounds.
Erin Harrell - Annual Fund & Volunteer Director
In 2008 I completed my MA in Arts Administration at Florida State University. After nearly ten years of working in nonprofits, I returned to school hoping to gain a new perspective on the practices of vibrant and sustainable organizations. I care deeply about the role of nonprofits in a healthy, progressive society. In the past I've coordinated volunteers, planned fundraising events, and managed databases. I've worked with missions ranging from mental health care for GLBT youth to theater for children to public radio and television. My most recent project was the founding of a community arts and economic revitalization institute in a small borough outside of Pittsburgh, PA. I moved to Austin a year ago seeking sunshine and the creative, active culture I loved when I lived here from 2000-03.

Kelley Janes - Academic Dean of Math/Science & Yoga Teacher
I will begin my fifth year teaching at Khabele. This year's lineup includes Physics, AP Physics, and Astronomy. I am also proud to serve and the Director of Math and Science. Much of my formal science education was done in Bellingham, Washington at Western Washington University, where I left the creative writing department and landed happily in the physics department. My studies have taken me to Southern Chile, Baja California, Italy, Mauna Kea, and the McDonald Observatory, which I find to be the happiest place on earth. In my spare time, I can be found practicing Ashtanga yoga, listening to Radio Lab or This American Life, conducting experiments in my kitchen, and oogling over baby Abe, second grader Henry, and my handsome husband, Nate.

Khotso Khabele - Executive Director
I grew up in Lesotho, Southern Africa and came to Austin at age 12. I graduated from U.T. with a B.A. in Economics. After college and a lot of soul searching, I began teaching Social Studies and Science. During my time as a teacher, I discovered my love for developing learning environments. After founding Khabele, I continued to teach and eventually moved into the Director position. As Director, I am responsible for designing the educational methodology, overseeing the curriculum, managing the faculty, hiring, creating the student, teacher and parent training programs, and ensuring that the mission of Khabele is being fulfilled. I have led the school from being a tiny experiment in education with nine students and a $110,000 budget to almost 200 students and a $2.5 million budget with a downtown campus of five exquisitely remodeled buildings. My main intention is to create and maintain a positive school culture in which students, parents, and faculty members connect with the community and rediscover their love of learning. My most recent accomplishment is beginning a new Ph.D. program in which I will be pursing a doctorate in Human and Organizational Development. I am also a dedicated father and volunteer and board member for a local nonprofit that supports aid work in Africa.

Moya Khabele - Advancement & Admissions Director
I graduated from The University of Texas with a BBA in International Business and Spanish Language. I began my career in education as a high school Spanish teacher and eventually helped to found the Khabele School. At Khabele I am responsible for marketing, recruiting, admissions, public relations, program management, major projects, and fundraising. I spearheaded the State accreditation process, oversaw the acquisition and remodeling of all four school buildings and the studio, managed all of the finance and certain operations, as well as exceeded our Annual Fund goals for the last two years. I am also an active member of The Association of Fundraising Professionals and a visiting accreditation team member for the Texas Alliance of Accredited Private Schools. In my free time, I practice Yoga, enjoy the Classics that I never got to read in my business education, and spend time with three lovely children and husband.

Eric Mann - High School Director & Math Teacher
I grew up in Michigan, attended Aquinas College, received my B.S. in Math, and discovered my love for mathematics. I embarked on a career as a high school teacher at the Metropolitan Arts Institute in Phoenix. My wife Laurie and I moved to Tennessee, where I attended the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI). I earned my Masters in Mathematics at UTSI and worked with mathematicians, engineers and scientists on problems in number theory, analysis, and software development. Following UTSI, Laurie and I moved to Austin, where I worked for National Instruments (NI) as a computer engineer. My career at NI lasted for two years. While developing and marketing software, it became abundantly clear that my heart was in math and teaching and not in engineering. About to embark on my fifth year at Khabele, I will continue teaching upper level high school mathematics, and I will serve the school as the High School Director. In addition to teaching at Khabele, I have been developing software tools and curriculum for high school math and science teachers for Transformation 2013, a collaborative effort of Education Service Center Region XIII and Region 20. Transformation 2013 is involved in the Texas High School Project and the T-STEM initiative.

Julie McClure - Finance, Human Resources & International Program Director
I graduated from The University of Texas with a BBA in Finance and a minor in Spanish. After college, I worked as a Financial Advisor and then as a Portfolio Manager for Austin Asset Management for two years managing investment portfolios from $500,000 to $800,000. I completed the educational and employment experience and examination required to become a Certified Financial Planner in January of 2006. Since joining Khabele four years ago, I have supported the school's expansion efforts in downtown, the acquisition of a new studio space for dance, yoga, aikido and music classes, and most recently the purchase of a new building. My passion is traveling. I studied abroad both in Santiago, Chile in 2000 and in Madrid, Spain in 2002, and have volunteered abroad in Antigua, Guatemala and in Trujillo, Peru. I have also arranged school trips to South Africa and Lesotho and I manage the school's federal status to issue I-20's and F-1 visas to international students.

Elle Van Tilburg - Teaching Assistant Manager
I am a proud Khabele School alum and was last year’s valedictorian of the 2010 graduating class. For two years of high school, I was one of the school’s main teaching assistants in the middle school program. This year I will be helping to run this program, which is designed to train and empower high school students to be teachers and mentors to middle school students. I am also starting my first year of college at the University of Texas here in Austin.
