The Arts

Khabele students are challenged to look: at themselves, at the world and at the relationships between the two. This looking is at the essence of leadership, and it’s at the essence of a holistic education. The Khabele School offers a wide array of art classes and programs for beginner to advanced artists and musicians to take a greater look at themselves and their relationship with the world.  Course offerings include:  Art, Photography, Film-making, Theatre, Modern Dance, Music Essentials, AP Music Theory, Jazz Band I, II, and III, Choir, Drum Ensemble, and World Music.

The Khabele Art Department – recently relocated to more spacious digs in the new building – continues to build a program that challenges its students to look and respond to what they see. “I would like all of our art students to really observe the world,” says Art Teacher and Director John Mulvany, “to record and analyze those observations and create art-works and artifacts that respond to and reflect their experience.”

Folks outside of Khabele have been responding, too. Our students have been lauded with awards and exposure throughout the year. Middle School students Hayden Lazarus and Avalon Hancock won three top prizes for printmaking at the Austin area Middle School Art Competition. Izabella Villiers Milton and Claire Nassaux were featured in Cantanker magazine’s SPACEBOOK project. Natasha Crosno, Alexis Moritz, Claire Nassaux, Isabella Villers Milton, Tessa Conners, Reed Sullivan, Steven Compton, Will Walsh and Lexi Cattin-Roy, all received awards at the TAPPS district art competition. At State, Katherine Mullin received 5th place for Mixed-Media 3D, Claire Nassaux won 6th for her Senior Portfolio (pieces of which can be seen outside the art room) and Tessa Connors was awarded Honorable Mention for Color Drawing. Our art students have also been featured in the annual Art Outside Show, the East Austin Studio Tour, the Huston Tillotson Unity Fair, and the annual district and state TAPPS art competitions.  All art work, theatre projects, and short films iare featured in two school art shows each semester.  We also feature several events per year that showcase our dance performances, drum pieces, and concerts from the Choir, Drum Ensemble and World Music Ensemble.  Our Jazz Band has played at the One World Theatre, the Long Center, the YouthCast Talent Competition, and journeys each year to the Jazz Festival in New Orleans.  They have been featured on KUT, News 8 Austin, and in the Austin Chronicle.
