Service Hour

joshvanThis year every student has the opportunity to make a difference in the world through a weekly service hour. It fits right in with the Khabele values. It isn’t an after school club you have to twist your schedule around to attend, but a chunk of time that is taken out of the school week to do something meaningful. Within advisories, students decide what is important to them and what they would like to improve or change. Then, they go for it! Service hour is about commitment, awareness, and community.

Community is the most powerful element of service hour. Advisories must work together in order to be successful. The whole Khabele community is needed to support advisories by attending their events, buying from their bake sales, and getting their cars washed.

Ultimately, our projects not only benefit the school community and the greater Austin community, but are intended to reach the level of the national and even global communities. It is pretty potent that our school is cleaning up the local environment, helping pets displaced by Hurricane Ike, sending love to soldiers in Iraq, and working to bring clean water to villages in Africa.
