Project Week
During Project Week, there is a break from all academic and elective classes. For approximately one week during each semester, students are given the opportunity to develop individual projects. This period is designed to equip students with the skills to turn an idea into reality. Each project concludes with completed project portfolio, including daily journal entries, photo journal, reflective essay, and presentation. The Advisor and/or a Project Week mentor support each student throughout the planning and implementation process. Advisors assign grades during preparation for Project Week based on the student’s engagement in the process, and Project Week grades are included in GPA calculation.
At the middle school level we offer a scaffolded approach to creating successful projects. Students will be either a part of a group project led by a Khabele staff member or, once they have learned the project week format, they can apply to do a solo-style project.
What are some projects students have successfully done in the past?
- Volunteering for the Austin Dog Alliance and learning about dog training techniques
- Learning how to sew a dress with a guidance of a fashion designer
- Learning about architecture software by interning at an architecture firm
- Writing a graphic novel with the help of a local writer and artist
- Building a greenhouse to help a mentally-disabled man
